Welcome to the butcher shop
When we first started the idea for the butcher of bathurst, a lot of talk went around how it would go. The only real kernel that we started with was the idea for a serial killer who happened to be black.
Think of the statistical anomaly! We pondered any historical black serial killers, and none came to mind. It seemed like such a simple idea, and one that never really occurred before, or if it did, outside of our radar, or in such a subtle manner that we just could not recall ever seeing it.
But the idea of simply doing a serial killer web-show did not seem... enough. We needed to throw things at it... we needed complications, we needed... meat.
In this season, you will see hints of that meat. The first obvious complication we gave is the idea of the serial killer with a roommate. The idea itself was not new-- after all, we have the loveable roommate from the movie Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. But still, there was the sense that there could be more we could do with the idea of a serial killer.
Cannibalism is not a new idea in the gamut of serial killers either. But the more I thought about how a serial killer would survive in today's society, the more I thought that there had to be a business of some sort upon it. What would the business of a cannibalistic serial killer be? The obvious answer: he sells human meat to the highest bidder.
So there was the first catch. The first bit of meat. We have others up our sleeve... for instance, there will be interesting facets of the voudoun religion that we will be exploring in later episodes, only briefly hinted at up to this point.
We will be going down interesting parts of the rabbit hole... it is also the intention that the next season be incredibly darker. We will have more preproduction time due to the holidays, and more time to sit and think about what it would be like to be a serial killer.
We promise no bodies will surface... except on the show :p
